There are many attractive benefits to becoming a solo entrepreneur. There are a vast number of choices you can make, and the potential income is almost unlimited. There are no employees or office politics to contend with on a daily basis.

The way owners of medium sized and large businesses usually handle the normal hassles of their day is to have managers handle most of the details. Yet there will still be all kinds of unpredictable issues and personality conflicts that are bound to arise. On the other hand you should be realistic and understand that even being a solo entrepreneur has its downside. But you’ll encounter that regardless of what you do in business and life.

The ability to manage time well and not waste it is one of the biggest lessons you have to learn as a solo entrepreneur. You have to learn to discern which actions are essential for your business and which aren’t. Successful businesses learn to outsource many mundane activities when they can afford to do so. Granted, you may not be able to hire a VA or assistant in the office. Just because tasks are mundane doesn’t mean you can ignore them. Set aside a certain time to do them, when it won’t interfere with other things. You’ll need to be creative and improvise as smartly as possible.

If you’re a solo entrepreneur, chances are your tendency is to do things your own way on your own schedule. This may include the attitude that you must do every single task yourself to make sure it will turn out properly. If you think about it, you’ll realize that one person can only do so much. If you persist and begin to earn and be successful, you’ll need to re-assess your processes. It’s best to have hiring or outsourcing in your plans, as you want to be ready to take your business to the next level. Things won’t get done perfectly as you like them, but you have to adjust your mindset. Just be sure you don’t unconsciously become a micro-manager.

Be selective about each thing that you do within your business and with your marketing choices. Of course it won’t hurt you that badly to listen to others’ opinions or to look into or think about some new marketing methods. But never decide on them just because that’s what the herd of other businesses are talking about. Social media portals like Facebook and Twitter are great places to find examples of this. Social media has been such a rage that businesses automatically jumped in. All it takes on five minutes on Facebook to see that most users aren’t choosing to visit the site because they want to read ads. Figure out which methods will prove to be the most effective for you and then learn not just how to do them but how to do them well.

Not everyone is cut out to be a solo entrepreneur, as it takes quite a bit of self motivation and determination. Make a strategic plan of learning and improving your mind. When you do learn something new, make sure you practice it and test it out for yourself. Make sure that the information you receive is up to date, as business changes rapidly nowadays.
